Helping another and serving another is the difference between ego and selfless love. The ego is self-seeking and self-serving when it "helps" another. Love is what comes through the soul when the ego is out of the way. Ego takes, and is self-elevating. It's help is always with one eye on what it can gain or profit in its helping of another even as it likes to feel superior, even God-like in the execution of its help. Love is equality and sees only equals. Loves seeks nothing for itself and expects no reward or gain. Ego is self-satisfied while love is simply grateful to have been of service. And service to another is the highest calling of the human being.

Now that I read it with a large part of the ego out of the way, it makes a lot more sense... :-)
