The longer I live the more ridiculous I see it to be resistant to what is. With growing evidence I see that patience and a willingness to accept (on an emotional level) the way things are can produce results far superior (and unexpected) than any other way. Resistance can be defined as any negative emotion...or action resulting there from; impatience, denial, anger, resentment, upset are just a few examples of resistance to circumstance.
To obtain and maintain inner peace...a peace that surpasses all understanding...we must learn to accept, on an emotional level, the way things are. This, of course, does not mean we will always like what is, that we have to live with a given circumstance, or that we can not change things, it just means that we drop the "emotional resistance" to what ever our circumstances are. Creative Energy is available to us only when we do not emotionally resist a given moment...when we accept on an emotional level what is as it is.
It makes no sense to deny that you are being robbed with a gun to your head, for example, yet it is calm acceptance of the current reality that offers you opportunities to deal with the circumstance in a Creative Way. I am reminded of that young lady who calmly read from the book "A Purpose Driven Life" and gently lead to Reality the man who held her hostage in her own home for several days to have him peacefully turn himself in at the end of the ordeal. Her emotional acceptance of her then current reality and the resulting calm and presence of mind that arose within her helped to save both their lives when it could have just as easily turned into unspeakable tragedy through emotional resistance to it.
All suffering and emotional pain are the result of resistance to what is. Have you ever lost something and suffered for it? A girlfriend, boyfriend, a job, a special piece of jewelry or anything at all that you had valued? Did you notice that you suffered for as long as you indulged in resistant thinking about your loss, and the emotions those thoughts gave rise to within you? Did you notice that you suffered in direct proportion to your failure to accept the reality of your circumstance?
Indeed, all emotional suffering is the result of our inability to accept what is as it is. Peace and contentment come to the degree that we accept reality and offer up no resistance to it. Cultivate the watching of your inner self...your mind, your thoughts and feelings within you. Learn to identify negative thoughts and feelings and learn to drop indulging in all inner resistance to Reality. See then, in this way, your inner peace progressively grow into a solid rock that nothing outside of you can ever take from you.
